NYJDI Launches Courses to Promote Fine Jewelry Manufacturing and Design in New York City

15th March, 2017

New York, New York - March 13, 2017 -- Unearthing talent, developing minds and educating in alignment with the digital age, the New York Jewelry Design Institute (NYJDI) is the leading establishment for continuous education of jewelry design in New York. Aligned with the city’s initiatives to promote local businesses, growth and development, NYJDI has installed a trilogy series encouraging jewelry designers to become entrepreneurs. The courses focus on three-step expertise in digital design, and introduce students to local manufacturing opportunities in the city that make 3D files a wearable reality.

In Understanding Jewelry CAD, taught by Jenine Lepera Izzi, the leading jewelry CAD program is explored, 3Design. Students learn the ins and outs of the program, creating their first computer-aided jewelry designs, then have the option to create a rapid prototype in wax with the 3D file they create. NYJDI makes in-person introductions to companies in Manhattan for printing and casting prototypes in gold or silver, as well as for stone setting, developing a finished piece.

Designing in Shaper is for enhancing 3D skills, following the skills retained in the 3Design program. Shaper and 3Design are combined for comprehensive jewelry modeling, and innovative freeform artistic sculpting and texturing are taught.

Jenine Lepera Izzi, Creative Director of NYJDI, says, “Although nothing will ever take the place of a beautiful handmade piece of jewelry, designers today are moving more and more into the digital age. Learning all the tools that are available is very powerful. There are things you can do by hand that you cannot do in CAD, just as there are things done in CAD that cannot be done by hand. Being able to do both creates phenomenal pieces, and we want to be sure we help aspiring local jewelry designers succeed in the business."

The third installment course, Sculpting with ZBrush, teaches the fundamentals of jewelry sculpting by creating key jewelry forms. For those looking to take things to the next level, ZBrush allows one to take the digital jewelry CAD files and enhance them with structural details, like digital clay.

Like the city itself, students of NYJDI come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are starting again with a new career, or have always dreamed of being a jewelry designer, others work full-time elsewhere and are looking to start a part-time business on the side, or are stay-at-home parents exploring a new business opportunity for re-entering the workforce. No matter the path, New York City offers a wealth of opportunities, and NYJDI strongly supports working alongside local businesses as part of the classroom culture.

Designing in Shaper is a 6-session class, held every on Monday from March 20th through April 24th, 2017. Sculpting with ZBrush is a 6–session class, held each Thursday, between April 25th through May 30th, 2017. Understanding Jewelry CAD is flexible, offered as private lessons throughout the year.

An educational haven for budding designers and jewelry pros looking to enhance their skills, the New York Jewelry Design Institute was founded in 2013 by Jenine Lepera Izzi, an interior designer turned jewelry designer who was inspired to pursue the field while living in Florence, Italy. The school was conceived out of a passion for design; a belief that the same design process used by the world’s leading artists and designers could be applied to the jewelry industry. The school has since expanded the curriculum to include many new practical courses.
