Shreveport, LA - June 25, 2014 -- Over 3,000 people are expected to kick off the Fourth of July holiday in Shreveport, Louisiana by taking part in the 30th annual Sportspectrum Firecracker 5K sponsored by Regional Urology. Activities begin at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, July 4, with the kids’ half-mile fun run. At 8 a.m., the 5K and healthwalk will take off. Both runs depart from the parking lot behind Sears at Mall St. Vincent, located at 1133 St. Vincent Avenue in Shreveport. The 5K and healthwalk will make its way through the historic and beautiful South Highland neighborhood, one of Shreveport’s oldest and most scenic neighborhoods. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s event will benefit ZERO: The End of Prostate Cancer.
“This is a great, healthy way to start the Fourth of July holiday,” said Matt Brown of Sportspectrum Race Management. “The course is a scenic and challenging road race for runners, walkers, and sightseers.”
$2,000 in prize money will be available, with overall male and female finishers receiving $500 each. Anyone who beats the course record will receive an additional $500. The first 116 male finishers and 75 female finishers will be timed and awarded a “larger than ever” 30th anniversary commemorative race mug. Every pre-registered participant will receive a 2014 Firecracker 5K t-shirt. Emcee and entertainment coordinator, Woody Nesbitt, will provide patriotic music before and during the race, with a few musical surprises planned along the route. A giant post-race party will include live music, food, fresh fruit, Michelob Ultra beer, Power Ice, and ice cold water.
